Hi Martin,
Sorry for the very long delay, work got in the way of fixing the Land rover 
somewhat. Anyway, you were right and it was the centre of the clutch plate 
that had sheared from the rest of it and could be rotated independantly... 
It turned out to be a late Series 2a clutch, learn something new  all the 
time, but have now obtained one, fitted it and bunged the engine back in. 
Just got everything else to put back now...
