Mark, it depends on whether the differential end of the broken shaft is =
lodged in the diff. If so, you'll need to drain the oil from the diff, =
remove the rear prop shaft and remove the diff, and that's only possible =
if the broken portion of the axle is short enough to get the diff out. =
If the axle is not lodged too badly in the diff, a heavy duty magnet on =
the end of a rod of some sort works to get it out without removing the =
diff. Basically, a good set of socket wrenches will take care of all =
the fixing bolts in the hub, prop shaft and diff. You'll want to carry =
some hub and diff flange gasket sealant as well.
My advice? Engage four wheel drive high range and hobble the truck in =
"front wheel drive" to a garage where you can work in comfort. =20
Also, just an FYI, the axles of that time period seem to be particularly =
brittle. I broke a half shaft bringing my kids up to daycare in my 107" =
SW. I then called Bill at Great Basin Rovers in Utah and he sent me a =
set of Maxi-Drive heat-treated shafts (should be widely available in the =
UK) and they've been bullet-proof ever since. Expensive, but worth =
every penny.
