Oops I forgot to say you need an appropriate container to take the used oil
to an oil recycling/authorised oil disposal centre. (they may also take the
metal for recycling).

However, If you are worried about breaking an axle, take Peter's advice
replace the old brittle units before they break with Malcolm Storey's
Maxi-Drive axles. Then you won't have to worry about changing the axle at
the roadside. (http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/maxidrive/ if you can't
find a local dealer they do mail order.) What is more if you remove them
unbroken you can sell them on eBay as extremely rare items and recover some
of the replacement cost of the Maxi-Drives.

P.S. BTW if you replace the axles with Maxi-Drive ones you will also have to
replace the drive member with a 24 spline type.  You can use Mal Storey's
which don't look original or use the standard Series 3 types which do.
