The "whine" is a result of bearing and thrust washer wear. The level of
noise being an indicator of how clapped out the overdrive unit is.
They seem to wear out fairly quickly(at least here in "long distance land")
due to the high internal loads and the inadequate oil supply. Used to have
one fitted in the past, until it grenaded.

I fitted a Fairy overdrive to my 1956 88" last weekend. She will now
cruise quite happily at 55mph on the flat. She will eventually wind up
to 60mph, but it's not nice.

I have 6.00x16s Avon Traction Mileages fitted - but not for much longer
'cos two of them are bald and I can't find any more!

I was pleasantly surprised to find my overdrive is virtually completely
silent - every other Fairy overdrive I have experienced has howled and
wailed horribly.

Cheers
James
