At least in the automotive industry the terms are well defined:
A reproduction is something produced using the original set of dies,
tooling, materials, whatever. It just originates from a later production
run.
A replica is something that looks identical but used different manufacturing
processes to be built.
A reproduction is legally homologated, a replica not. None of the spare
parts we buy correspond to this legal definition. So, assuming we have an
accident due to something failing, it is in Europe imossible to claim
manufacturer's liability from Land Rover. To sue the supplier of the
component brings us quickly to the question of the qualification of the
labour that did the repair work. Wrong assembly is a commonly used tactic to
evade legal responsibility.
In the States that may be different....

Interesting word "replica". My dictionary defines it
as an exact copy. Therefore it is used (in my opinion)
often incorrectly to desribe a "reproduction".
Making an exact copy of a car fifty years old must
only be possible if you were using fifty year old
parts. A reproduction could look "exactly" the same
but wouldn't be, once the composition of the materials
was examined. This is of course how forgeries of the
great masterpieces are detected.
Anyway, tell me more Mark about the reproduction; it
sounds fantastic,
cheers Charlie
