You could go with the system from the Range Rover Classic system (later used
on the 110/Defender)which works with levers in the same plane as the
original LR steering. Your biggest problem will be modifying your front
cross member to place the steering box in the correct position. You will
probably have to lift up your battery support slightly.
The RR steering column is a straight shaft with a rubber universal joint
onto a second steering shaft that runs forward to the power steering box
which would replace the function of the steering relay box on the 80". You
would also have the modify your 80" steering cross rod to accept the RR rod
end (although it may be possible to modify the LR lower steering arm to fit
the RR box).
The problem with the RR steering box is that it mounts to the inner side of
the chassis rail and has a large cylindrical protrusion forward of the
vertical plane of the steering shaft. You may be able to continue the
crossmember cut-out for your radiator through to the RHS chassis rail
(through where the steering relay used to fit) which may just be sufficient
for your needs.
It's unfortunate because I had all the bits you would need from a crash
damaged RR I used for replacements for my RR body panels after I had a
rollover, but I sent the box to my mechanic and the steering column to the
re-cyclers.
If your in Sydney try Graeme Cooper Automotive in St Peters 02 9550 2689, he
is currently dismantling a RR Classic and you could see/measure the steering
system.

I was hoping to modify the car to take a powersteering unit and ANY
suggestions and modifications to SI steering would be appreciated.
