Bruce,
My first landrover was a 1950 ex MOD rhd imported to the states by a
private individual.
I too was unhappy with the firewall flexing, and resulting play in the
steering. The firewall would flex then the wheels would turn.
What I did was to procure a RHD boxand column for a series 2a (happened to
be a 109.
Along with the bracket that mounts it to the frame. Idrilled tgree holes
through the frame and shortened the column about eight inches, and using a
steering u-joint from a ford or something in a junk yard mounted it
comfortably for me.
It did not need power steering as the recirculating ball box was real easy.
My current 51-80 has a saginaw manual box out on the front horn and it too
doesn't need power steering.
