I was after some feedback/suggestion about modifications to a 1953 SWB. The
current steering is the original worn & nut type box that bolts onto the
firewall with 2 bolts down through the firewall (not the type that bolt to a
bracket that comes up off the chassis).
The rough terrain the vehicle is driven on is flexing the firewall and has
caused the back of the original guards to fracture. This flex also moves
the steering roadswhich affects steering if travel at any sort of speed over
rough roads.
I was hoping to modify the car to take a powersteering unit and ANY
suggestions and modifications to SI steering would be appreciated.
The steeringbox/firewall has been braced with a peice of 75mmx75mmx4mm steel
to the chassis which greatly improved the problem, but this is not really
what I consider to be a permanent solution, and the tyre hits the brace on
hard left turns, widening the already rather large turning cirlce.
