Hennie

I just have to clarify a couple of points in Allan's post. Range Rover diff
centres have a ratio of 3.54:1 and were designed to be pushed along by a low
revving motor with a lot of torque, a V8. Only the early Range Rover diffs
with 10 spline centres are interchangeable with Series 1 Land Rovers, Diffs
on the later Range Rovers (1990's onwards) have 24 splines and are NOT
interchangeable with Series 1 Land Rovers.

Rover cars have similar issues the old Rover 75's, 90's, 110's and 3000's
had 10 spline 4.3:1 Diffs which are very interchangeable with Series 1 Land
Rovers. The V8 Rover cars like the 3500 also have the 10 spline 3.54:1
diff, interchangeable but wouldn't get pushed along very well by a 1595cc or
1997cc Series 1 motor.

    G'Day Hennie,
Except for very early 80" differentials, the ratios for Series I, II
and III are the same at 4.7:1 and they are interchangeable.
Interestingly, Range Rover diff centres are also interchangeable and
give a higher ratio, as do Rover 90 car diffs.
Rear axles were semi floating until the introduction of Series II
models. From then on they are fully floating. the Series III axles have
a finer spline at the outer end, hence the driving member is also
different to early front axle driving members. With the introduction of
fully floating axles, front and rear hubs are the same.
Series II models also feature a 2" wider track, hence axles are 1"
longer.
Front hubs are interchangeable with all models except that the
thread on the wheel studs changes at some stage (Series III I think).
This is all generally speaking, there are differences such as
Salisbury rear diffs in LWB Series III etc. etc.
    Cheers
