The only ratio changes in the gearbox relate to the lower gears and =
occur about the time of the introduction of the 2 litre motor in the =
80". The top gear is 1:1 direct drive to the transfer box. I believe =
the Transfer boxes are the all same at 1.148:1 giving a final drive at =
5.396:1. see: http://users.mrbean.net.au/~rover/gearbox,.htm

Revs and speed are in a direct relationship. Even if someone fitted =
4.88:1 1949 80" diffs, it would only make a final drive 5.603:1 which =
shouldn't make as much difference as your reporting. =20

The most likely problems are:
a.. Your clutch is slipping? (do you smell burning while driving or =
when you release the clutch, the engine revs up, then slows down as the =
car moves off, a bit like a boat.)
b.. Your transfer box is stuck in low ratio?
(I assume you don't have something weird fitted, like a rubber band =
installed between the crankshaft and diff or a torque converter instead =
of a clutch.)

My other questions are: (and there not meant to be offensive)
a.. How are you measuring the Revs?
1.. If your using an impulse tachometer is it calibrated to a 4 =
cylinder and not something silly like 2 or 3 cylinders. =20
2.. If you are using one with an alternator pick up, is it calibrated =
to the pulley sizes on the engine.
3.. If you are using one with a magnetic or optical pick-up is it =
working correctly
a.. How are you measuring the speed? =20
1.. Have you checked it by measured distance over measured time?=20
2.. There isn't some sort of reduction device in the speedo drive =
that's malfunctioning?
3.. Try using a GPS device to check your speedo.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Diana

Hi all,

Thanks for all the really usefull replies to my original question. But
all of this does not solve my underlying problem. My problem is that my
107" SW (with 2.25 petrol engine) only reach a speed of 75km/h at 4000
rpm on open tarmac. =20

Someone mentioned to me that not all S1's had the same gearbox ratios
and that might explain the lack of speed for my van. Can anyone perhaps
shed some light.......?

Hennie
