Howdy,

I'd be interested if anyone has any series 1 parts in or around
Canberra?...
I have just picked up a series 1 1953 80" luddite mobile.....:o)

.

It should be possible to reclaim a rusty block. A sleeve can be inserted
into the bores after machining to bring them back to nominal size. The
top
flat side can be milled to clean it. If the engine has been laying
around
without the sump, reclaiming of the big end caps and cleaning of the
bearing
shell bores can prove somewhat more difficult and may exceed budgets.
The
industrially proven method is to plate the surfaces after initial
machining
to clean them and then machine them to size. As the block is cast iron,
plating requires some heat treatment prior to welding. Ideally the block
needs to be heated up to some 150 to 200 degrees centigrade. There are
shops
who do that quite well but it has its cost. If the budget is generously
designed, manufacturing of new big end caps could be envisaged.

Nearly everything is possible... I have witnessed many "creative
repairs"
working in a factory in Portugal for several years.

Luckily there is not enough rain on my fathers block to ever have to
worry
about mowing the grass!

I was hoping the guard was a little later,...I'll just have to learn how
to
weld aluminium, or maybe seek professional assistance.

Incidentally, I have the very sad remains of what I believe is a 1950
motor,....#06105381....does that sound right? It was a pile of parts in
the
corner of a collapsed shearing shed on a property north of White Cliffs.
I've been planning to take it to one of my fathers veteran car club
mates to
see if the block is reclaimable, there's quite a bit of rust in the
bores.
But having seen what they are prepared to do with rusty lumps of
iron,...who
knows?
