Following on from what Mark has said, my (original) 2 litre diesel did have a 2 1/4 petrol fitted at some point, according to some engineers reports I got with it, although it had been converted back to diesel when I bought it. When I stripped it down for its current rebuild, there was no sign of any new engine mounts being fitted to the chassis, so it must have used the original mounts and the engine must have just bolted straight in. I think the gearbox is original to the vehicle as well, so presume the bell housing on that was designed for the 2 litre diesel, but with later engines in mind.....
I seem to remember reading that as the wheelbase was increased in length for the 2 litre diesel, so allowances were made for the 2 1/4 petrol and diesel engines that were being developed for the forthcoming Series Two (although it would not have been called that then!) but I cannot remember where I read this - one of the magazines maybe?

My 58 Series I 88" has a 2.25 in it and I'm very happy with the
performance. The conversion was already done when I bought this truck and it
was originally a diesel which may have helped with engine mounting brackets.
The radiator has not been moved and the aircleaner/carb is no problem. I had
to replace the transmission last year and a IIa unit slipped right in.
Standard IIa exhaust also fits fine. With overdrive and 215/86x16 tires I
can cruise at 60-65 with no problems. Cheers, Mark
