Ed,
The bolt pattern is different, the 2 litre is the same as the 2.6, but
the 2.25 is different. You need a 2.25 bell housing that from anything
upto but not including the series 3, ie the one with the clutch slave
cylinder on the drivers side, so that the rod for the clutch can go in.
Also, I'm not sure how the 2 litre engine mounts go, as when I put a
2.25 diesel in my 86", I didn't have them, as it had a holden six
cylinder in it. But I used a standard 2.25 engine mount bracket on the
passenger side, and one from a 2.6 on the drivers side, and used the
proper 2.25 diesel rubber engine mounts on both sides. I have been told
by others that there are issues getting the carbie under the bonnet, as
a friend of mine with a 2.25 petrol in an 80" had to turn the bonnet
mounts upside down to lift the back of the bonnet a bit. If you go down
the 2.25 diesel route, the injector pump just interferes with the air
cleaner, so I moved the battery to under the drivers seat, and bolted
the air cleaner to battery plate. Also, you might have to move the
radiator forward a bit, I'm not sure, as mine had already been moved
forward a lot to fit the six cylinder in. The 2.25 diesel went quite
well in the 86", I actually had it at 70 MPH with 7.50x16s on, and that
was verified behind a Range Rover!! Well that is until it got a sump
full of mud, and then the oil light would come on at anything below 3000
RPM. Oh and the other issue I had is that the pully on the crankshaft
is directly over the front diff housing, found this out by the dint in
the axle housing after I accidentally got it air born!.
Oh and I forgot, as Tony said, the front bearing on the lay shaft is
different, but after I ended up putting a 2A F suffix gearbox in mine (
None syncro and sealed input shaft!! )
