The series 1 and the series 2 have different stud pattens. The series 2
does not have the small stud near the starter and I might have this the
wrong way round I think series 1 has a stud at 12 o'clock and series 2
10 and 2.
Another catch is the size of the lay shaft front bearing hole . Early
2s had a small bearing same as the series 1 so the thrust bearing
housing will fit, later ones the bearing hole is bigger ( stronger lay
shaft ) so you must use the larger thrust bearing housing to suit the
bellhousing . You need to check what gearbox you have, if its original
it will be the small one.
I fitted a 2A 4 cyl gearbox to my 2lt so had to use the series 2A 6 cyl
bellhousing to get the stud pattern right.
Another way is fit a 2A 4cyl gearbox with the engine.

Cheers Tony

A while ago someone (sorry, forgot who!) was putting a 2.25 in place of
the
2-litre and needed to change the bellhousing. As I remember, it was
decided
that a late S1 or early S2 bellhousing was needed.
I presume that all the clutch release and so on are retained from
inside
the original bellhousing so the S1 clutch can be used.
The 2-litre in my 1957 88" is tired. I do about 20,000 miles a year
(its
my only car!), so I want a 2.25 with all the bits ready to swap over,
just
in case...

My question is - how do I recognise the correct bellhousing (or what do
I
ask sellers/people to look for) ?

Thanks in advance... Ed
