Hello Ed,

I have replaced my tired 2L for the 2.25 in my 1957, 88". See my photos in
the SOG under "gudjeon". As other's have said, to match up the newer 2.25
you need an early series 2 bellhousing with the smaller layshaft bearing.
This will fit onto the ser1 tranny with your original clutch release shaft.
The newer bellhousing also must have the hole to fit the original clutch
release shaft. My tranny got a complete rebuild as you have to tear it down
to change bellhousings (almost). I the mated it up to a series 2a
transferbox. No additional mods here. The series one transfer box has a
smaller intermediate shaft and I came across a newer replacement in better
condition.

Using a 2a transfer box, I could make use of the 2a mounts that came with
the box. These are the small wedge-shaped brackets that bolt on the chassis
cross member under the transfer box. The 2.25 motor mounts can stay the
same as what comes with the 2.25. You just need to obtain the small
wedge-shaped adaptor that is bolted to the right hand horn that the motor is
mounted on.

Also, I had the original radiator recored and rebuilt to fit the 2.25. The
bottom rad hose needs to be moved the other side of the bottom rad tank. I
also had them replace the hose inlet and outlet to the proper size to accept
later 2a hoses.

Throttle linkage needs to be redone as well, depending what carb you go
with. My Zenith was cable operated so I made it work on the this type of
system. My starter from the 2l fit on to the 2.25 with no mods (i cannot
remember the Lucas #).

To sum it up briefly You need:
  - Early series 2 bellhousing w/ small layshaft Brg. (the 2l and 2.25l have
diff. bolt pattern)
  - You can use existing clutch withdrawal provided there is a hole in the
side of housing.
  - Modify existing rad. 2a rads are too wide.
  - Change throttle linkage
  - Use original transfer box if you like. Newer type is stronger and 2a
mounts are plentiful.
  - Fabricate a different air intake elbow for the air hose on the top of
the carb (this is the only underhood clearance isssue I found with the 2.25
in the '57,88".

Once you have all these bits sorted, it all fits like it should. Any other
questions, please give me a shout via SOG or the Major.
