Getting old vehicles through the MOT is always a bit of a struggle. Some
testers are excellent and some are awkward. The rule in GB is that wipers
are not needed if the windscreen can be folded down although you must have a
windscreen washer! This of course would squirt directly in your face but
that is the rule. Strictly the folding windscreen rule was intended for
those old fashioned cars with windscreens where the top half folds up rather
like a louvered window and you can peer through the gap between top and
bottom.

The current regulations do not specify the wipers must clear the screen in
two wipes (I am told) for older cars. For them the old rules apply – those
that were in force on the day the car was registered. For wipers it is that
the car must have “ one or more efficient automatic windscreen wipers “ –
There may be some doubt that early wipers ever met that regulation but ……
Mine gets it's MOT fine with only the single drivers side wiper that was
originally fitted.

There are good points about everyone not understanding the rules. Strictly
the D with bar lights are not legal but most testers accept them nowadays.

Nick.

HI Everyone,
Not sure where I read this recently, but as part of the MoT, the wipers must
clear the glass in two sweeps.  Now I don't know of that is two "cycles" or
just two passes, one over, then the return.  Clearly, this was optimistic
with L-R wipers!
Also, if soft top, you can remove the canvas, fold the screen down and no
wipers are required!  Richard Hughes says that is how he often gets through
MoT as one of his motors is seized.  Brit logic at it's finest.
