I think there are a few reasons why Land Rover have so many microprocessors
these days, not because they want to fit them but are forced to develop this
way mainly for the ever increasing drive for fuel economy, stringent market
emissions regulations and all the gismos added, driven by fleet market
demand. Agreed, if they break down you're stuffed.

In the UK particularly there is ridiculous one-upmanship in the type of
fleet market status vehicle you get provided with and the gadgets it has.

The only time my Series One has let me down was due to a wiring failure, but
I fixed it at the roadside. That was because I really need to re-wire the
whole vehicle. Apart from a collapsed clutch plate which when I dismantled
it found it was a "Valio" with some plastic components in it would you
believe, my late manual 300TDi Disco has also been faultless so far 70,000
miles from new. I bought it to hopefully last me 20+ years because it was as
simple as possible, no engine management like the auto version, no abs, no
air con, electric seats, cd system etc. The first thing I did was disconnect
the exhaust gas reirculation system and the headlamp power washers.
Unfortunately I'm stuck with the central locking and electric windows which
will pack up one day. When I replaced the exhaust I also fitted a straight
through stainless job without the catalyst converter which is quite legal
for diesels in the UK.

Cheers

Martin
