    G'Day Bruce,
I do not agree that it is an "age" thing. These older machines and
devices can be repaired, a word that may soon dissapear from the English
language.
TDI 200 or 300 is the way to go (or earlier Defender). I appreciate
the reasons for the Europeans insstalling all of this anti pollution
stuff and the fact that the computers help in achieving their goals but
have never seen kangaroos coughing in the pollution from a passing 4WD ,
it is not really an issue here.
A work colleage recently bought a brand new 500cc Indian made Royal
Enfield motorbike (I am tempted). The Royal Enfield dealer is not in
Canberra but told him to take it into any approved motorcycle dealer for
its warranty service. He did this and about an hour after leaving the
bike there he got a call from them asking what these points were that
had to be adjusted.
How much energy is used to convert a bunch of raw materials into a 2
ton vehicle? where do those emmissions go?
These people who tout their zero emmision electric cars etc. forget
that the source of the polution is just moved to a power station out of
town somewhere.
I got nto a discussion the other week at a neighbour's barbeque with
a bloke who was carrying on about his fully solar powered house. Really
great stuff, but like kids thinking that cartons of milk come from a
supermarket, they think the silicon comes from a shop and forget that
the process of reducing it is very dirty or how would we go if every
back yard had a couple of tons of lead acid batteries in it. To really
ruin his "clean" case, he revealed that his house is just under 100Km.
out of town and he commutes in by car every day.
I like to think that by continuing to use our "old" vehicles we are
making a contribution to minimising the depletion of materials and energy.
    Cheers
    Allan
