Wayne's post on honing of brake cylinders is a good option but only for very
minor scale and scratches in the bore. It should be used with caution. The
problem with honing is that it can oval and taper the bore reducing the
efficiency of the seal and can potentially be unsafe. Honing will do
nothing for pitting caused by rust as a result of water contamination of the
brake fluid. A properly installed stainless liner is actually more reliable
than the original cast iron/aluminium cylinders.

In my opinion, modification or overhaul of hydraulic brake components are
the domain of brake specialists.

Hi Mark,
A couple of inexpensive fixes you might try before re-sleeving the master
cylinder or buying one. I found a hone made for the task that would fit in
a drill. This smoothed the bore. Then I bought a rebuild kit which is the
same for a Ser II as our trucks. It is basically two rubber grommets or
seals. I found I had a good vacuum with the repair and it has worked very
well for the last couple of years. Others on the list have either
re-sleeved the bore or replace with a Seris 2 unit
