I went through the same issue earlier this year (April). The original
distributor for the 80" both the 1595 cc and the 1997 cc Siamese bore is the
same (and is common with the Vanguard engines also used in Ferguson TEA20
tractors).

If your cap is too small in diameter, then it is for the later distributor
on the 1997 cc spread bore motor and every 4 cyl Series Land Rover after
1954 to 197? whenever series 3 finished. (Many people have retrofitted the
later distributor.)

There are some differences in the caps between the early 80" and later 80"
but they are superficial external differences in the moulding where the
leads come out. The caps are interchangeable.

The only Land Rover parts dealer who was able to supply a cap was Craddocks
in the UK. When the cap arrived (about 6 weeks) it is not either of the
Land Rover/Lucas designs with the leads exiting the cap horizontally but the
Ferguson tractor design with the leads exiting vertically. You may have
better luck finding a cap for the Ferguson tractor.

Cheers
Diana

P.S. Below is the transcript of the original parts number queries.

Distributor Cap

When I look at the '48 - '53 parts manual the green bible tells me a '48 -
'53 LR needs Rover part 261240
When I look at a Lucas popular parts catalogue it tells me a '48 - '50 LR
needs LUCAS part number 415707
AND it tells
me a '52 - '53 LR " " " " 415298
Mine is a 1951

When I try to buy one all I find is Lucas part 418871 the cap for the '54 -
'58 2 litre engine

Hi,

I ordered in what the parts book said was the correct distributor cap, etc
for a 2.0 80" and discover that the cap is too small to fit the base. My
distributor has model #25D on the base casting; is this correct for the
2.0, or did the Belgian Army upgrade to Series II distributors when they
came in for rebuild? Not complaining -- 25D parts are easier to come by.
