If the 25D is the same as the DVX and DV DX distributors I would agree with
you. The Rover part remains the same over the entire period and the leads
were horizontal. It is only in the Lucas parts books where they use a
different part number in the later 80" vehicles and that is a cap with the
vertical entry leads. (This means that the leads rub on the underside of
the bonnet.)

Having done this on an 80" Land Rover in the 1970's, if you purchased a
distributor cap from a Land Rover parts dealer, you got a cap with the
horizontal leads. If however you purchased the cap from a Lucas parts
dealer it had the vertical entry leads. (The funny thing was that I always
thought it was bad design that the leads rubbed on the bonnet. It was only
when I subsequently purchased a new cap from the local Land Rover dealer
that I got one of the horizontal lead caps. It wasn't bad design just a
poor aftermarket parts chain!)

George,

All the common 25D distributors are effectively identical. Any cap which
fits will work. All caps have the same size base. The direction in which the
leads exit is all that changes. Some come out vertically and there are at
least three variations with horizontal leads. The difference between these
is simply the direction of exit.

The 25D that Rover supplied for the Land Rover had horizontal leads. I
think, almost certain but not quite sure, that the leads faced outwards over
the exhaust manifold.

Nick.
