I know this is not a Series 1 story, however on my Range Rover Classic
(phase II) they stopped fitting the Oil Pressure and Oil Temp Gauges. As it
was modified with a 5.1 Lt V8 and is an automatic which is used to tow
Series 1 Land Rovers and dual horse floats. I was concerned about the temps
so fitted VDO electric sensor models in place of the blanking plug in the
engine and with an in-line pipe fitting on the hot side of the transmission
cooler line. The VDO gauges only say "Temp" I know which temp is which by
the gauge position on the dash.

The problem of oil temp sensors in the sump is that they read the pooled
sump oil, the lowest temperature oil in the system, and not the temp of the
oil circulating in the block (if it is circulating). (Although if the sump
oil is overheating you really do have a problem!)

Cheers
Diana

Hi Mark,

So - to answer your
question - yes you can use the oil temp gauge without the oil cooler as long
as you have a way to make the threaded flange in the oil pan. Seems to me
you could even use a water temp gauge as an oil temp gauge - just change the
markings on the face of the dial so as not to confuse yourself!

Jeremy

Hi all,

Can an oil temp gauge be fitted to a late 2l engine without haveing to use
an oil cooler? And can a rev counter be attached to a late 2l engine?

cheers

Mark
