Hi Tom,

That very thought occurs to me every time I'm alone in the arctic!  In '98 
I was on Pamiok Island off the Ungava coast, and my Inuk guide  (who 
carried a big-bore high-end game rifle) took me aside our first morning 
and told me that I should never leave camp alone without a rifle (for 
which we had no permit).  He then handed me an ancient bolt-action .22 
with no clip, and a single .22 shell.  He had a straight face and I kept 
mine, but I never carried the rifle and he never mentioned it again.  I'm 
sure it was an insurance obligation.  If a white bear did appear I suppose 
the bullet was for myself.  It is somewhat reassuring in this case that, 
unlike the white bear, blacks do not stalk humans.
