    Michael,
A battery in good condition should be able to maintain a high
voltage with a reasonably large current draw. If voltage drops
significantly with such a current draw, it indicates that the battery is
no longer able to charge to capacity and hence is past its use by date.
Cells do not "burn out", they usually fail by sulphating up, this
phenomonen is caused by a layer of solids building up in the bottom of
a cell and effectively shorting it out. A battery in this condition
(and most other failed conditions generally related to age and cycling
of the battery) will charge to a nominal 13.5V but will not have any
capacity.
Capacity in a battery is expressed in Amp/hours and is the number of
amps that the battery can deliver over a period of time. For example, a
12 amp/hour battery can deliver 12 Amps for one hour or 120 Amps for
1/10th of an hour, the condition most likely when attempting a start.
These heavy current draws have costs, firstly the battery will boil off
some Hydrogen and the plates will get hot and buckle, perhaps even short
with each other (battery capacity reduced for ever) and secondly deep
cycling (running the battery to a low level) in an ordinary battery will
also permanently affect its capacity to accept a full charge.
In relation to Series I Land Rovers, what sloenoid?
    Cheers
