Ya know, I agree with you 100 percent. My 51 was a gutted hulk when I got 
it, I wouldn't even try to locate a 1600 engine for my 51 here in the US 
let alone porcupine tail lights. So mine has a 4 cylinder Chev 153 engine 
with 1970-88 tranny and axle assemblies. By doing it that way, parts are 
readily available and reliable. It drives great and handles fine. Oh, and 
the tail lights are round black generic from the autoparts store. Financial 
and logistical all the way!
The only things I would change is one wiper motor to original and add some 
leg room. :-) I am 6-2 and luckily It has a smaller steering wheel with a 
tilt column.
