Hello Diana and all,

In the UK, any vehicle, be it car, Land Rover or lorry etc as long as it was
first used before 5th September 1960 is allowed to have white side lights at
the front and red brake lights at the rear as turn signal indicators. I have
a letter from the Gov Minister at the Dept of Transport around 1988 to prove
that is the case. Nothing has changed since in these rules and it would be
an MOT pass.

Sensibly, what you cannot do is mix and match them at each end, so you can't
have red AND amber at the rear, or one red, one amber. At the front, both
must be white or amber, not white AND amber. You can however, have white at
the front and just amber at the rear.

My very first (1952) 80" Series One which I bought off a farmer but was
straight out the Mersey Tunnel Police in 1964 had this system, as did my
1958 ex army Series One bought at army auctions, Ruddington. I have removed
the amber flashers ever since which misguided souls have installed and
therby ruined perfectly good body panels. Whether anyone thinks the old
system is safe in modern traffic or not is another issue, I have never had
problems, but don't use it every day. If it flashes, others will see your
intentions. The semaphore arms are a bit dodgy in this respect and always
were a bit reluctant to pop out.

For this system, there is the simple mechanical Lucas switch as shown in
the manual or an expensivce Lucas box of electronics as fitted to early
Morris Minors etc. I did make the system up on a tiny board at Uni using
microelectronics which can be done very cheaply these days, but I prefer the
old switch on the extra dash panel.

Cheers

Martin
