Hi Alyn,

the circuit for rear tail lamp is shared with the flasher circuit. The
'secret' is in the indicator switch in the dashboard; it is designed such
that when a turn signal is needed, the switch will interrupt the voltage
destined for the tail lamp and direct it to the flasher canister, which in
turn then creates the pulsating effect and then redirects the voltage back
onto to running lamp circuit.

To convert the lamps to meet the NADA standard in addition to the Lucas 488s
for the front, you need the indicator switch model Lucas 31509B and a
flasher canister Lucas Model FL5. To see these, there's the 1955 Lucas Parts
catalogue for the Land Rover in the Documents section of the SOG. Also
available is a nice colorized wiring diagram for the NADA circuit in the SOG
- access is from the link on the SOG homepage, left hand side look for the
button labeleld NADA Flasher Circuit.

The UK spec Series 1 generally did not have indicators in the normal sense,
trafficators were available. However, the station wagons and export models
did have the Lucas 488 fittings on the front with twin filament lamps. The
rear indicators were the rear lamps wired in a way which allowed them to
flash. Some cars in the US seem to work like this if I recall correctly.

The only difficulty in the UK is that white front indicators are not common
and other drivers may not notice them and similarly a non-amber rear
indicator could confuse other drivers.
I have stayed with the white front indicators rather than fit additional
amber lights at the front and have fitted amber indicators at the back just
below the cross member. I have used a new Hella relay and all seems find.

Later range rovers appear to have front amber side lights on all the time
and I wondered about fitting twin filament amber lights at the front of my
series 1.

Will, if you still need a pic I could send an image of the rear of my S1
that might help.
