I'm pretty sure we do this for our RHEL boxes at work, although I can
think of several cases in which an administrator has specified third-
party (but still very well known in the RH community) repositories.

As someone who used Debian as his primary server OS from 1997 to 2003
I actually went out of my way NOT to make the state of Linux distro
package management in the 90s! Boo! :-)

This is actually true for other OSes... Mixing CPAN and ports gets
you a similar headache. These days I use a package/port if it's
available, and dump the CPAN version as soon as that happens. This
still gives you a very simple management policy, however: "If OS has
package, use package. Otherwise, use CPAN." The sure mass of code on
the CPAN, and that everyone I know who writes code either uses CPAN
or at the very least knows they *should* be using it, means that you
will hopefully not have to keep a list of alternative software sources.

For development (on OS X, using DarwinPorts for other things), I
haven't even considered using a package manager. I pull everything
from the CPAN.

CPAN gives you a single vendor (so to speak) for getting Perl
Modules, which in my mind as a systems administrator is an umbrella
for Software That Uses Perl. This is incredibly useful for admins,
because so many pieces of software that they want to use require
these little modules that would otherwise (assuming their OS has not
packaged them, which is often the case for a few of us) be scattered
all over the place. If the software lacks a really nice installer,
the admin will be required to download them all manually. Hello 1996.
Hello maintenance nightmare.

I'm sure there's quite a bit of the cruft missing, but probably
nothing major, as Debian is a very heavy user of Perl. This is
definitely true for other Linux distros and the BSDs, though. For
those of us who use those things these days, the CPAN is an
immeasurable time saving resource.

Hopefully this hasn't gotten too off-topic (if that was possible
considering this discussion) but I don't think anyone had mentioned
CPAN's usefulness for admins.
