The success of CPAN as a development tool surely is that it fits so 
closely with modern software design - slotting in classes that do one 
thing, and that have minimal coupling to other parts of the system. I'm 
finding that as I mature as a programmer, I think more and more in terms 
of these independent units, and some of them just naturally go to CPAN. 
There's not really anywhere else these bits of code can go, there's 
nowhere else they'd be useful, they don't actually *do* anything on 
their own. They only make sense in close relationship to lots of bits of 
other people's code.

I view CPAN, freshmeat, sourceforge etc as primarily development tools 
rather than as distribution tools. The real distribution tools are 
things like RPMs, debs and *BSD ports. If you put your code on CPAN, 
people are going to *work* with it, and often, they're going to try and 
use it for things it doesn't quite handle. And because it's in a 
development arena, the psychological barrier to tracking down the author 
and making feature requests and bug reports is low. And consequently, 
the amount of thought that goes into the framing of some of these 
requests can also be low.

For me, the next stage is that I begin to get feedback on my modules 
from users, and that both feels good and helps me with my work.

But maybe one day, the back catalogue will become a drag, as I use less 
and less of it. Then the support requests. bug reports, and enhancements 
will become a pain.  More to the point, there's now a lack of congruence 
between me and my users, where before, we shared similar goals, so these 
requests can now grate. Especially the poorly framed ones.

Tony, maybe the change you've detected is more about a change in your 
relationship with your own code, than in the community itself? And maybe 
a similar process happens with most/many/some/$quantifier other hoary 
old CPAN contributors.

Just a thought that may or may not be worth a damn.
