For the most part, I agree. My problems with CPAN aren't so much
technical as social. I don't know whether the dynamic has changed, or
whether I'm just now noticing it, or whether it's just a natural result
of having so many modules on CPAN. I've talked to at least two other
high profile CPAN authors who have expressed the same reservations. I
still need to talk to others to see if I can pin this down better.

As I said earlier in the thread, I am, to a certain extent, playing
deliberately obtuse to see where the conversation goes. I was hoping
that might lead to an interesting discussion on the merits of CPAN vs
other means of distribution. I seem to have expected too much.

I don't think this is really appropriate for Class::DBI at this point.
As I've said before, I see it as a project with a definite goal, at which
point development will, for the most part, finish. It's not something
that will be forever accumulating new features. Most of my thinking time
on CDBI is not in working out how to add a feature, but on how to open
up the code better so that someone else can add that feature as a Plugin
or somesuch.

At last count there were close to 70 CDBI add-ons, subclassess, and
plugins on CPAN, so I think that approach is working quite well. I see
my main task at this point as making it work much better.

The thing that has surprised me most about 0.96 is how remarkably stable
it is. There just hasn't really been a need for many bug fixes. The fixes
in 0.999 are, for the most parts, just about making things work slightly
better, or bringing the code better in line with the docs. I don't think
there's anything that people need and can't easily work around. If there
were I'd have certainly made a CPAN release before now. The biggest area
of change is the live object index, and it's the thing that still needs
the most attention.
